Our approach to spelling in Years 5 and 6 is centred around the National Curriculum statutory spelling list for Years 5 and 6. Using this as the core of our spelling teaching provides children with a clear, consistent and purposeful spelling curriculum.
The statutory list has been carefully selected to include words that children are likely to encounter frequently in their reading and writing, alongside words that present particular spelling challenges. By focusing on these words, we can ensure that pupils develop a secure understanding of important spelling patterns, rules and conventions rather than simply learning a large number of unrelated words.
A consistent focus on the statutory list also allows children to revisit and consolidate spelling over time. Rather than continually introducing new vocabulary, we can give pupils repeated opportunities to practise words, apply them in different contexts and develop long-term retention. This is particularly important because successful spelling depends on children being able to retrieve spellings automatically when writing.
Using one agreed list across Years 5 and 6 also provides consistency and progression. Teachers can build on what pupils already know, identify gaps and provide additional support or challenge where appropriate. It prevents spelling becoming an ever-growing list of words to memorise and instead gives children a manageable set of essential spellings. Our aim is to develop confident, accurate and independent spellers. By concentrating on the statutory spellings and teaching the patterns and strategies behind them, we give children the opportunity to understand why words are spelt in particular ways and to transfer this knowledge to unfamiliar words.
Ultimately, using the Year 5 and 6 statutory spelling list provides a focused, manageable and evidence-informed approach. It enables teachers to spend less time continually generating new spelling lists and more time teaching spelling effectively, revisiting learning and helping children apply their knowledge in their everyday writing.ings to master.
Importantly, this approach does not mean that vocabulary development is restricted. Children will continue to encounter ambitious and interesting vocabulary through their reading, English lessons and wider curriculum.
